These Ants Just Keep Coming Back!
April 11, 2013
Another year, another round of foraging ants in the kitchen stealing bits and crumbs of food. If this sounds like your household then you are not alone. Ants in Pennsylvania and many other locations across the country become more active in the spring and it is not until we take serious measures to prevent and control ants that we will finally be able to enjoy this spring weather without the little insects breaking and entering into the home.
Of the thousands of different species of ants out there, the most common ants that we find here in Pennsylvania are odorous house ants. These tiny black and brown colored ants are mainly after food in the kitchen and although they will eat just about anything, they do prefer sweets, cheese and peanut butter. But why is it that you see them every year at this time? And if you don’t see them during the winter then how do they keep coming back every spring?
In most any cases, ants do not go anywhere during the winter, they are around. Their colonies which are often located outside (but can also be found inside) are vast and they can withstand the entire year in Pennsylvania. What we often find happening is that ants remain less active during the colder months of the year and then when the warmth of spring emerges, so do the masses of ants. Queens begin to reproduce and the ant colonies grow causing thousands of workers to head out in search of food...in your home.
There is not much we can do to control ants that are out in the natural world but there are ways to get rid of ants and their colonies on your property and prevent ants from foraging inside of your home. Here are a few tips from our team of PA pest control pros:
Seal any cracks or crevices along the foundation, windows and doors.
Replace any broken or torn window screens that ants could use to get inside.
Trim back tree limbs and shrubs so they are not touching the side of the home.
Be sure to clean up crumbs and spills of food and sugary beverages right away.
Store all open food in airtight containers both in the pantry and on the counters.
