Should I Be Worried About Millipedes Around My Souderton Property?

June 15, 2020

If you own a home or business in Souderton, you’re likely always looking for ways to keep your property safe and looking good. As a property owner, dealing with pests is no fun, but it is part of the deal. While there are many Souderton pests you might have to deal with that can pose health risks or cause property damage, there are other pests that are mostly considered a nuisance.

But even pests that are a nuisance aren’t welcome in your home. Even harmless pests can be gross to look at and leave your home feeling dirty. The millipede is one pest that most people find quite creepy. While "millipede" means one thousand legs, the truth is they only have 30 to 90 pairs of legs.

Because millipedes are often mistaken for centipedes, knowing the difference and what they look like can be helpful. Here is what millipedes look like:

  • They are usually red, brown, or black.

  • They have antennae, but they are small.

  • Their legs are tucked under their bodies close together where centipedes have legs that stick out.

  • They have long, cylindrical bodies that are worm-like.

  • They have two pairs of legs per body segment where centipedes only have one pair per segment.

Are Millipedes Harmful?

There are some pests that are obviously dangers to humans or pets such as certain kinds of spiders. Then there are others that can damage property such as termites or rodents. However, some insects leave people unsure about how dangerous they are.

Millipedes are overall harmless pests. They don’t leave humans with dangerous bites. At most, they leave some individuals with a rash if there is skin contact with them. Millipedes can do some damage to plants, especially smaller seedlings.

While they might be harmless to humans, this doesn’t mean you want them in your home. Their long, wormlike appearance and multiple legs can leave you feeling grossed out when you look at them, and it can be hard to feel like your house is clean with insects around.

Millipede Prevention Tips

While millipedes do not pose any significant risks to you, your family, or your pets, this doesn’t mean they are houseguest you want to leave alone. While millipedes can help break down decaying plant matter, they aren’t good to have inside. There are some things you can do to prevent millipedes before they make it onto your property. While none of these methods are able to completely prevent millipedes, they can lower the chances you’ll have a problem with them.

Here are some tips:

Since millipedes are attracted to moist environments, you can make your property less attractive to them by fixing leaky pipes and faucets.
You can also use dehumidifiers to get rid of excess humidity.
Remove things like leaf piles and decaying plants on your property as millipedes are attracted to them.
Keep firewood at least 30 feet away from your home and stack it in a dry, organized manner.
