Cockroaches are terrifying pests. They defy our shared understanding of how living things survive. Did you know they can last underwater for up to 40 minutes or that they can live a week without their heads?  You try to squash them, and it's like they come back from the dead. Couple that with the fact that they transmit all sorts of bacteria and diseases and it's no wonder we want them out of our Souderton homes.

Because cockroaches are nocturnal, you might not know you have an infestation until you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water. Then you see these freakish pests scurrying across your floor or down your drain. If you are seeing cockroaches running around your home during the day, you may be dealing with a massive infestation. This is a sign that they are competing for food or have run out of places to hide.

The most common types of cockroaches in the Souderton area are the:

  •  German cockroach

  • Oriental cockroach

  • American cockroach

  • Brown-banded cockroach

  • Wood cockroach

Depending on the type, they can be anywhere from a ½ inch to almost 2 inches long. All cockroaches can be mistaken for a beetle, and some are given cute names like "water bug" or "palmetto" bug. No matter what type it is or what you call it, a cockroach is a cockroach, and you do not want them in your house.

Cockroaches can exacerbate asthma and allergies and spread bacteria. For unknown reasons, some people are sensitive to them and will react, especially when there is a large infestation. A sign that you have cockroaches is a musty smell in your home.

By nature, roaches thrive in filthy areas such as garbage dumps, piles of feces, sewers, drains, and other decomposing matter. While they are attracted to cluttered and dirty homes that provide plenty of places to hide and a good food source, having a cockroach infestation doesn't mean you lack housekeeping skills. Your home may be connected to another that has a cockroach problem or in an area that is just prone to infestations. Cockroaches can travel quickly across pipes, between walls, and through outlets, and are resourceful when it comes to making their way into your home.

At Moyer Pest Control, we include cockroach prevention in our Complete and Platinum Home Guard programs. Our trained technicians will offer solutions to keep your Pennsylvania home free from cockroaches. Contact us today for advice or for an appointment to rid the roaches from your Souderton home.
