When you find out your house has a rat problem, you get angry. When you get angry, your work life suffers. When your work life suffers, you get fired. When you get fired, you get desperate. When you get desperate, you take the first job that comes along. When you take the first job that comes along, you take that job as a circus clown. When you take that job as a circus clown, you get stuffed in a tiny car with 16 smelly clowns...Don't get stuck stuffed in a car with 16 smelly clowns, take care of that rat problem.
Here are just a few of the ways you can keep from being stuffed in a car with 16 smelly clowns:
Rats think garbage is tastier than pizza, and even more so when that pizza is in the garbage. For this reason, keep all garbage sealed in hard plastic bins.
When fruit lies on the ground, rats have a picnic. If you have a fruit tree near your home, make sure to clean up fallen fruit before it attracts unwanted guests. If your yard has food that attracts pests, it's only a matter of time before they start wondering if what's inside your home is even tastier.
Protect food inside your home. If rats find a way in, don't let them find easily accessible food sources like pet food left out all night or pantry food kept in cardboard or paper. Put pet food in the fridge between meals and store pantry food in sealed containers.
A good cleaning goes a long way. Rats love clutter. It makes them feel safe. The less clutter you have in your home and the less stuff you have lying around on the floor, the less attractive your home will be to rats. This isn't a sure fire way to make rats go away, but it is a contributing factor to why they stay.
Eliminate entry points. Search your exterior walls for holes or cracks big enough for a rat to get in. Keep in mind that some rats can fit through a hole the size of a quarter.
Seek professional help. Whether you already have rats living in your walls or you want to be completely sure no rats can get in, help from a professional pest company is the best way to go. Keeping rats out requires specialized knowledge that only an educated pest controller knows.
