Mitigating Risk For Bed Bug Problems In New Castle This Summer

July 23, 2019

Every so often we bring something home we probably shouldn't have. For instance, have you ever found an item that most people would consider to be trash, but you saw something else in it? Did you then later regret bringing that item into your home—saying to yourself, “What was I thinking?” Of course today we are not talking about things you brought home intentionally, but rather unintentionally—bugs. More specifically, the elusive and sleep wrecking bed bug.

Factors That Can Lead To A Summer Infestation

The first thing you should know about bed bugs is that they need assistance to get into your house. In the pest world, we call it hitchhiking. Unlike human hitchhikers, they do not stand on the side of the road with their thumb up, but instead, climb onto items around them; eventually finding their way into our homes. Naturally, if they depend upon us to get around, the more we move affects their ability to travel as well—making summertime travel season a prime time for bed bug infestations.

If you plan on traveling, even to go shopping, your risk of bringing home bed bugs is much higher than during other times of the year, and bringing home an infected item is your quickest way to an infestation.

Tips To Keep Bed Bugs Away

Below are some steps that can help minimize your chances of a bed bug infestation.

  • When traveling, check any rooms you are staying in for signs of bed bugs, beginning with the mattresses.

  • Check used furniture before bringing it into your house for hiding bed bugs.

  • Always store dirty clothes inside of an airtight ziplock bag after going to the gym, or when returning from vacation.

  • When you get home from vacation or business travel, wash all clothing immediately—killing any potential clingers.

  • Share information about bed bugs with any guests you may soon be entertaining, so they don’t bring bed bugs into your home when they visit.
