Key To Getting Ahead Of Ant Problems In Souderton

March 16, 2020

It is warming up in Souderton. Soon, there will be insects buzzing around in your yard and insects crawling around near your home. One insect that is sure to make an appearance is the humble ant. Ants are so common and plentiful, we often ignore them as we crunch them underfoot. But it is hard to ignore them when they get into your home. And it is impossible to ignore them when they get into the food in your kitchen or pantry. Let's take a look at a few Souderton ants you can expect to see. More importantly, let's take a look at how you can get ahead of ant problems and stop ant infestations from taking root in your home this spring and summer.

Common Souderton Ants

This is by no means an exhaustive list of ants but these are the ants we most commonly help customers deal with.

Pavement Ants — These are small, reddish-brown to black ants that can come into homes in large numbers when something encourages them to do so. While a pavement ant is only about ⅛ of an inch long, it can be very annoying when it brings thousands of its best friends along with it. A pavement ant colony can have more than 10,000 individual ants. If a colony is established near your foundation wall, which is a common location for these ants, all it takes is a small opening in your exterior, and for one ant to get in and find a food source, and an infestation will begin. That little ant will come out and let all the other workers know that it found food. It does this by laying down a chemical pheromone. Within minutes, the colony can mobilize an army to invade your home.

Odorous House Ants — These little black or brown ants are between ⅛ and 1/16 of an inch long. While certainly not the only insects that will put up a stink about being crushed, this ant is known for its unpleasant, sickly-sweet odor. But its bad smell is far from its worst characteristic. A colony can have 100,000 workers, and nests can be created inside the voids of your home.
Carpenter Ants — These black ants are the largest ants that will get into your home. Workers are an impressive ⅝ of an inch long. When carpenter ants get in, they don't just get into your home and build nests, they damage the wood of your home as they do it. Carpenter ants chew galleries inside wood, and build their nests inside.

Spring Ant Prevention

Now that you know a little bit about each type of ant that can become a problem in your Souderton home, you also have a jump on understanding how to protect your home from infestations. You know that pavement ants are likely to target cracks in your foundation, and carpenter ants are going to target sources of soft wood in which to create their galleries and establish their nests. In light of this, consider the following tips:

  • Seal cracks in your foundation wall.

  • Seal gaps around pipes that pass through your foundation.

  • Seal gaps, cracks, or holes around exterior doors and windows.

  • Replace rotting wood on your home.

  • Address any location where the wood of your home touches the soil.

  • Remove leaves and other organic debris, especially if it is near your foundation wall.

  • Keep firewood at least twenty feet from your exterior and up off the ground.

  • Reduce conditions of moisture that can lead to wood rot.

  • Eliminate sources of standing water.
