Do You Remember When Mosquitoes Were Just A Nuisance?
June 16, 2016
We all have memories of going somewhere that had a ton of mosquitoes. Whether it was a cabin near a lake, a campfire near the ocean, a hiking trail over the mountains, or just a backyard cookout, we've all been attacked by mosquitoes at some point. And, for the most part, we were only worried about getting itchy welts. But those days are gone.
America has been sheltered, for the most part. Mosquitoes don't affect us as horribly as they do in the rest of the world. When we hear that mosquitoes kill over a million people in the world every single year, it doesn't really compute for us, does it? Dying from a mosquito bite is something that happens in other places. But this thought is simply untrue. People die in the United States from viruses carried by mosquitoes every year, and much more get sick--not realizing that their sickness was the result of a mosquito bite.
In the U.S., we have cases of West Nile, dengue, malaria, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses, every year. These viruses send people to the hospital for treatment and sometimes even lead to death. What is most insidious about mosquito-borne viruses, is that they often get mistaken for the flu or the common cold.
Now we have a new virus that threatens the states. The Zika virus, which has been proven to cause the congenital birth defect known as microcephaly in unborn babies at all stages of pregnancy, is appearing all across the country. While this virus has not yet entered into local mosquito populations, experts believe that it is inevitable.
Fighting mosquito-borne viruses is nothing new for government health agencies. They've been doing it for decades. Through a combination of public awareness, mosquito control, and mosquito surveillance programs, they have managed to keep us safe. But, they don't do it alone. Home and business owners across this great land of ours help too, by getting professionals mosquito control services for their property.
If we are to continue to keep our country as safe as it has been, more home and business owners need to get involved. The increase in world travel is making our country more vulnerable to the viruses that plague the rest of the world. But, mosquito control can buffer those viruses from taking root and spreading like wildfire.
Mosquitoes are no longer just a nuisance pest. The threat mosquitoes pose are discussed at the highest levels of our government. The dangers of mosquito-borne viruses are very real. And the threat is growing. Consider mosquito services for your property from the experts here at Moyer Pest. Together we can protect our families, our communities, and our country.
