Ant Season To Begin Soon
March 29, 2017
Things are warming up here in Pennsylvania, and that means an early ant season. It also means that you should be on the look-out for the signs of these most common ants:
Carpenter ants are damaging. They burrow into wood to build their nests, but they do not actually eat wood like termites. Carpenter ants can cause a lot of damage in a short period of time. They are hard to detect, so damage to structures, furniture, and other items may have already been done before your realize that you have an infestation. They are black and large, up to 5/8 of an inch long. Look for these ants around your foundation, or you may find hollow wood or sawdust trails in low-traffic areas of your home and property.
These ants are a nuisance. They invade your home and can leave an awful rotten coconut smell if they feel threatened or crushed. They are brown or black and very small, around 1/18 of an inch long.
These ants are a nuisance. They disrupt your home and property by nesting in cracks and crevices. Pavement ants invade pavements, walkways, stone landscaping, concrete slabs, and buildings. They are a reddish brown to black, and around 1/8 of an inch long.
All types of ants live in colonies underground, and they are very social. Their colonies are made up of thousands of ants that work together to meet the needs of the colony by foraging for food. Their highest goal is to protect their queen. They enter your home looking for moisture and food. They come in through cracks and holes around window and door frames, or other points of entry. They will seek out foods ranging from greasy to sugary and other ‘treats’ including insect carcasses. Once they discover the easy access to food in your home, they begin building nests inside.
