German Cockroaches In West Chester

There is much we can say on the topic of German cockroaches, but there are really only three things West Chester property owners need to know about this species of cockroach: what dangers German cockroaches present, how German cockroaches get in, and what works to guard against the dangers that the cockroach species in West Chester pose. Here's what you need to know.

Ways German Cockroaches Can Be Harmful

Few would disagree that German cockroaches are gross. This is enough reason for some West Chester property owners to not want them around. But these, and other pest cockroaches, are more than just gross. They can be very harmful.

  • German cockroaches pick up bacteria and parasitic worms when they explore trash bins, dumpsters, compost heaps, sewers, trash heaps, drains, and other dirty locations. These organisms attach to the cuticle of cockroaches (that's the cockroach's skin). As it moves about in your property, it spreads these harmful microorganisms to foods, surfaces, dishes, silverware, and other sensitive areas.

  • A German cockroach is able to incubate diseases inside its gut. These diseases are spread when someone comes in contact with their feces and/or saliva. As cockroaches chew through paper and cardboard food packages, they taint the foods inside with their waste and fluids.

  • The waste and saliva of German cockroaches, as well as shed cuticles, can become a source of respiratory illness when they are shed in air ducts or on bedspreads. A recent study concluded that cockroach infestations lead to an increase in hospital visits for asthma-related symptoms, particularly in children.

  • The exterior of a German cockroach can be very dirty. When a roach moves across the skin, it can cause an allergic reaction and a rash may form.

  • While German cockroaches don't prefer to eat living flesh, they are attracted to dead skin that can be trapped in the eyelashes of sleeping people. This can cause these cockroaches to bite you while you're sleeping. Bite wounds from cockroaches tend to become swollen and red due to exposure to bacteria on the cockroaches as they bite.

How German Cockroaches Get In

There are factors that can attract German cockroaches to the exterior of your property. Once there, it is likely that they will find a way inside. German cockroaches are drawn to tight spaces such as gaps and cracks. They like to squeeze into spaces where their backs and bellies are touching two hard surfaces. There are three things to consider if you want to keep them out:

  • Reduce conditions that attract German cockroaches to the zone around your exterior. More cockroach activity will inevitably lead to a greater chance of infestation.

  • Seal any gaps, cracks, holes, or tight openings that a German cockroach can slip through.

  • Have a licensed professional apply EPA-approved pest control products to take down German cockroaches before they get inside and establish themselves.

How To Protect Yourself From German Cockroaches

If German cockroaches have gotten in, there are a few things you can do to limit the health threat they present.

  • Put stored food products in sealed glass or plastic containers.

  • Store fruit in your refrigerator rather than on the counter.

  • Clean your litter boxes frequently to make sure no excrement is above the litter.

  • Keep floors and surfaces as clean as possible.

  • Keep your interior trash receptacles as clean as possible.

  • Remove your trash frequently to avoid having rotting food in your trash, or get a trash bin that has a cover that seals completely.

  • Put your toothbrush in a container. Cockroaches eat toothpaste.
