What are stink bugs?
The brown marmorated stink bug was first found in Allentown in 1998 but it is believed that this pest was accidentally introduced into eastern Pennsylvania several years earlier. Appropriately named, stink bugs have scent glands that are capable of emitting an offensive smelling liquid. Adults are approximately 17 mm long and like other stinks bugs, they have the typical shield shape and are almost as wide as they are long. Both the upper and lower body surfaces of a BMSB are shades of brown with patches of coppery or bluish-metallic colored punctures on the head and pronotum.

Why do I have them?
Stink bugs are a nuisance pest, especially in the fall when they are in search of protected, overwintering sites. They are also a problem in the spring when they become active again.
Are they dangerous?
Stink bugs are a serious agricultural pest and will feed on fruit, vegetables and other farm crops. Though they are not harmful to humans and do not reproduce inside structures, their smell can be quite noticeable if they are squished or vacuumed up.
