The brown marmorated stink bug was first found in Allentown in 1998 but it is believed that this pest was accidentally introduced into eastern Pennsylvania several years earlier. Appropriately named, stink bugs have scent glands that are capable of emitting an offensive-smelling liquid. Adults are approximately 5/8 of an inch long and like other stinks bugs, they have the typical shield shape body associated with these pests and are almost as wide as they are long. Both the upper and lower sections of a brown marmorated stink bug's body are a shade of brown with patches of metallic copper or bluish-colored punctures on their head and dorsal plate.
Stink bugs are nuisance pests, especially during the fall when they are in search of overwintering sites. These pests are attracted to the outside of buildings and will also make their way indoors utilizing cracks around windows and doors among others. Stink bugs are also a problem in the spring when they become active again.
Stink bugs are a serious agricultural pest and will feed on fruit, vegetables, and other farm crops. Though they are not harmful to humans and do not reproduce inside structures, the smell they leave behind if they are squished or vacuumed up can be quite noticeable.
Because stink bugs are found both indoors and on the exterior of structures, they can be very difficult to get rid of without help. A Moyer Service Professional™ can confirm the presence of stink bugs and recommend a treatment that will greatly reduce the number of stink bugs entering your home/structure.
Many do-it-yourself methods intended to rid your property of stink bugs simply do not work as the chemicals they use are not effective or applied in the appropriate areas. Also, if misused or mixed improperly, pesticides can be very dangerous to people, pets, and plants.
