Silverfish Identification

What are silverfish?

Silverfish are small insects with long, teardrop-shaped, flat bodies and measure between 1/2 and 1 inch in length. These insects get their name from their light grayish-blue coloring which makes them appear silver and shimmery as they move across the floor in a wriggling, almost fish-like manner.

Why do I have them?

Silverfish need humidity to survive. For this reason, they congregate in the humid areas of our homes and are typically found in kitchen cupboards, basements, laundry rooms, attics and under bathroom sinks. Silverfish also like dark places and they can often be seen at night or in dark places during the day. Silverfish do not hibernate so they can be active all year round.

Food sources for silverfish can be anything that contains starch or polysaccharides. Common items containing these substances include sugar, human hair, dandruff, photos, paper, glue (especially wallpaper paste), and book bindings.

Are silverfish dangerous?

Silverfish do not bite or sting and are not associated with the spread of any diseases. However, they are considered a nuisance due to their general presence and their ability to cause damage to personal items and wallpaper.

How do I get rid of silverfish?

Silverfish can be difficult to control because they are nocturnal and their ability to hide in a variety of places throughout your home makes them difficult to spot. A Moyer Service Professional™ can confirm the presence of silverfish and recommend one of our two levels of interior service to help you get rid of silverfish.

Can I do it myself?

Silverfish are not a pest that many homeowners have much success in eliminating on their own. Many do-it-yourself repellents and sprays intended to rid your property of silverfish simply do not work as the chemicals they use are not effective. Also, if misused or mixed improperly, pesticides can be very dangerous to people, pets, or plants.

Is the treatment safe?

The health and safety of our customers, their families, or their employees is very important to us and that is why we use Integrated Pest Management products and treatments that are EPA registered for pest control use. In addition, all of our Service Professionals™ are registered and licensed by the state or local jurisdictions where we provide service to ensure proper application.

How soon can you get here?
