What are silverfish?
Silverfish are a small insect with a long, slender, tear-drop shaped, flat body and measure 1/2 to 1 inch in length. These insects get their name from their light grey/blue coloring which can appear shimmery and look silvery as it moves across floors and surfaces in an almost fish-like manner.

Why do I have them?
Silverfish need humidity to survive. They like the humid areas of our homes and are typically found in kitchen cupboards, basements, laundry rooms, attics and under bathroom sinks. They like dark places and they can often be found active at night or in dark places during the day. Silverfish do not hibernate so they can be active all year round. Their source of food can be anything that contains starch or polysaccharides. Many common items containing these substances are: sugar, human hair, dandruff, photos, paper, glue (especially wallpaper paste, which they eat after biting a small hole in the paper) and book bindings.
Are they dangerous?
Silverfish do not bite or sting and are not associated with any diseases; however they are considered a nuisance with their presence and their ability to cause damage to our personal items and wallpaper.
