Yellow Jackets Threaten Homes In PA

Yellow jackets, wasps and other stinging insects are common in the summer.

A pest commonly encountered and perhaps feared in the summer and fall is the yellow jacket. This species of stinging insect does not have a good reputation when it comes to swarming around your home or nesting on your property. While yellow jackets are beneficial as predators to other pests like flies and lawn pests, it does not mean they are doing us any favors by nesting underground or inside the walls of our homes.

Yellow jackets are one of the more aggressive stinging insects due to the fact that they are very protective of their colonies and if threatened, they may sting repeatedly and in large groups. By the end of the summer and into the fall, yellow jackets have really expanded their numbers and the result is that they have created large nests. This can make outdoor activities difficult if they have invaded your property. Nests are usually located underground or inside of the walls of homes if they have access.

Since this particular species of stinging insect is aggressive, they are considered a dangerous pest and should be avoided. Here are a few tips to prevent stings and yellow jacket nests from the pros at Moyer Indoor | Outdoor:

  • Avoid bringing sugary drinks and treats outside as this will attract yellow jackets quickly.

  • Always inspect your home and property for any signs of a stinging insect nest.

  • Use extra caution when doing yard work or landscaping and be on alert in case there are swarming yellow jackets or a nest nearby.

  • Do not attempt to treat for yellow jackets on your own as this could make the problem worse and leave you as the victim of lots of stings!

  • Keep doors closed and windows secured with screens.

  • Seal off any gaps or holes that could be used for yellow jackets to gain entry into the home and apply insect mesh screens to vent openings.

If you do happen to get stung then make sure to watch out for signs of an allergic reaction and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms occur. But hopefully by staying on alert and notifying the pest control team at Moyer right away if you spot a nest, you will be in the clear of any painful stings this summer and fall.
