Why Is It So Hard To Get Cockroaches Out Of My New Castle House?

June 24, 2020

You may have heard the saying that cockroaches could survive a nuclear war. After all, these insects can survive for up to a month without food and up to a week without their head! With that kind of survival odds, what can you do to get them out of your house?

What Is A Cockroach?

There are thousands of species of cockroaches. In New Castle, German cockroaches are the most common species found inside homes. They are tan or light brown and grow to be just over half an inch long. American cockroaches are another common species in the area. They are much larger, growing to over two inches in length. They are reddish-brown in color. Finally, brown-banded cockroaches can be found in the area. They are usually around half an inch long and brown in color, with pronounced darker bands.

Cockroaches are nocturnal. They come into homes looking for shelter, warmth, humidity, and food. They can run incredibly fast and have wings which allow them to glide to escape, though most cockroaches don’t really fly. Cockroaches are omnivores and will eat just about anything. They’re attracted to decay and are often found around fecal matter, garbage, and rotting materials.

Cockroaches: The Dirty Truth

It’s no secret that cockroaches are disgusting pests. But just how gross are they? As we mentioned above, they’re attracted to decay. They are happy to spend their days inside garbage cans and around fecal matter. While they’re eating in these dirty places, they pick up pathogens and bacteria which they can then carry with them into your home.

They may contaminate cooking surfaces and food. When you use the surfaces that have been explored by a cockroach, you risk exposure to these dangerous pathogens and bacteria. Cockroaches are also known to make asthma and allergies worse for many people. Their shed skins can get in the air and cause severe reactions.

How To Get Rid Of Cockroaches

It’s easy to decide that cockroaches need to go, but not so easy to figure out how to get rid of them. As we mentioned earlier, cockroaches are resilient and not easy to kill. Trying to control cockroaches on your own can be difficult for several reasons.

  • You can’t see them all. Since cockroaches are usually only active at night, it can be difficult to know just how bad the infestation is. If you see one cockroach, there are probably hundreds more just out of sight.

  • You can’t target all of them. Cockroach-killing products you can buy at your local grocery store work if sprayed directly on a cockroach, but there’s no way to spray cockroaches that you can’t see.

  • You might not even be able to kill them. Not only are sprays only good for one-at-a-time, but they don’t always work. Many cockroaches have built up a resistance to common anti-cockroach sprays, so they may only be stunned by these chemical products.

  • You’ll waste a lot of time. Cockroaches multiply quickly. For every cockroach that you kill, there could be five more hatched. The longer you try to deal with an infestation on your own, the more cockroaches will multiply around your home.

Instead of trying to take out cockroaches on your own, let the professionals take charge. At Moyer Pest Control, we have experience with these three common species of cockroaches and more. We know how to identify the cause of an infestation, determine the scope of the problem, and target the cockroaches in your New Castle home so we can quickly and effectively get them out.
