Why Do I Have Fleas In My Home
February 13, 2018
Most everyone has had to deal with fleas at one time or another in their lifetime. But have you ever stopped to wonder about how they get into our homes in the first place? The obvious answer to that is that pets bring them in, but not everyone has pets, which means there must be other ways. It turns out, even though we normally only think of fleas as living on Fido, that fleas generally live outdoors in the grass, or in woods or fields. There are many ways they infest homes, one of which is from a neighboring property or home that are infested. Just a walk near an infested area could land you with an unwelcomed hitchhiker on your shoe or clothing, and before you know you're itching constantly. Rodents, bats, and squirrels are other ways fleas get into your home. If one of these animals has taken up residence in your house due to cold weather, or while looking for food, they could have brought in a flea or two with them. The fleas will spread from room to room, follow hosts, reproducing and laying eggs. The eggs can lie dormant for long periods of time until they can detect an available host nearby and will hatch within seconds.
Avoiding fleas can be difficult, especially if you have pets, but your vet can prescribe a flea product that helps, and there are steps you can take to get out ahead of an infestation. You can try vacuuming around sleeping areas, cushions, and dog beds. You may also want to steam clean carpets to get rid of fleas hiding there as well. Fleas prefer damp dark places, so try to maintain a dry sunny home to make your home less attractive. That said, a professional pest control service will help you get rid of an entire infestation of fleas in your home quickly and effectively and is really your best option.
