Termite Awareness Week is an essential week in the pest control industry that is dedicated to helping people become more aware of the signs and damages that termites can cause. It can also be helpful in finding a way to get help for prevention, elimination, or both.

Moyer Pest Control in Pennsylvania is proud to promote this year's Termite Awareness Week, March 11-17, 2018, alongside the National Pest Management Association. Termites are known as the “silent destroyers” and they are prolific wood eaters. They can feed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and that can cause significant structural damage to a home; damage that causes homeowners an estimated $5 billion dollars in repairs in the United States alone.

Termites live in multiple large colonies underground and are often happy to set up satellite colonies within your home. They are social insects that consist of three main groups; workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The reproductives will oftentimes swarm in the spring, and they will branch off to create new colonies in order to find a mate, breed, and raise their young. They will make mud tubes or tunnels in which to travel back and forth while foraging for wood to feed on. They prefer soft wood, but some types of termites can eat hardwood as well. You may notice dark or blistering wood surfaces and cracked or bubbling paint if you have a termite infestation. You may also find discarded wings around windows or doors during swarming. Other evidence termites leave behind are hollow wood, bowing floors, sagging ceilings, warped walls, dead termite husks or wings, as well as small exit holes in wood with small sawdust piles underneath.

If you recognize any of these signs or other indications of termite activity in or around your home, you should call a professional pest control company immediately to eradicate them. At Moyer Pest Control you can get comprehensive termite control services and other customized pest control programs. It's important to understand the seriousness of a termite problem, how costly damages can be, and that damages are not usually covered by insurance.

The best way to protect your home and property from termite activity is by calling Moyer Pest Control for a year-round coverage program. We offer a Platinum Home Guard Program that tackles termites, mosquitoes, stink bugs, mice, earwigs, and spiders, as well as other common pests.
