What To Do About Stink Bugs Around Your New Castle Property

May 21, 2021

There’s nothing worse than spotting a big weird bug crawling around your property. You’ve seen your share of ants and bees and other insects, but the bizarre shape and movement of stink bugs seem almost alien by comparison.

But are stink bugs actually dangerous? And why exactly are they called “stink” bugs, anyway? If you’ve seen (or smelled) these unwelcome pests, you can help prevent an infestation from getting worse. Here’s what to do about stink bugs around your New Castle property.

What Are Stink Bugs?

Stink bugs, or brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSBs), are non-native to the United States and are believed to have been brought from Asia sometime around the mid-1990s. These invasive bugs have since become highly successful in the eastern United States and continue to expand their territory.

An average stink bug measures about 3/4 of an inch in length and has a shield-like shape. Its gangly limbs jut out in all directions, elevating the stink bug’s body and making it appear even larger than it actually is. Brown marmorated stink bugs have a speckled brown coloration with bands of patterning along the wings.

When threatened or outright smushed, stink bugs release a foul odor in defense. The smell has been compared to cilantro, but more intense and musky. When dealing with stink bugs, it’s best to try to avoid crushing them, as stink bug odor can linger for days if the bug is provoked.

You can find stink bugs indoors as the weather turns cold toward the end of summer and fall. In order to warm themselves, they often congregate on the sides of buildings that receive intense sunlight. They are also fond of eating fresh produce and will eagerly attack your garden or vegetable patch.

Are Stink Bugs Dangerous?

Many pests are a threat to health and safety, spreading disease or destroying property, but stink bugs aren’t one of them. Stink bugs are fairly harmless and have no means to attack you or your home (besides their gross smell). Although they may cause a mild fright when they unexpectedly burst into flight, these pests are only dangerous to crops.

Stink bugs are notorious villains of the agricultural world, hated by farmers and gardeners alike. Stink bugs drain the fluid from plants with their needle-like mouthparts, causing damage that can impede the growth of crops or kill them entirely. You may first notice signs of stink bugs on your property by damage to plant life in your yard or garden.

How To Prevent Stink Bugs

Thankfully, there are some easy steps you can take to control the population of stink bugs around your New Castle property.

  • Seal cracks: Prevent stink bugs from squeezing their way inside by sealing up any cracks or crevices around the exterior of your home or business. Check for damage to the foundation or siding and seal with silicone caulk as needed.

  • Reduce light: Stink bugs are attracted to light and will naturally gravitate toward strong light sources. Consider turning off outdoor lights at night or switch to a yellow bulb or sodium vapor lights.

  • Repair screens and weather stripping: Check for damage to screens and patch tears or replace screens entirely. If weather stripping and door sweeps are faulty, replace as necessary.

  • Check boxes and bags: Stink bugs have been known to hitchhike their way indoors. Check the contents of boxes and bags you bring home to make sure you don’t have any unwanted passengers.
