What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like?

One of the first signs of bed bug infestation is waking up with bed bug bites. But how can you tell the difference between a flea bite, a mosquito bite, or some other skin condition? You have to begin by checking for other signs of an infestation. If you confirm bed bugs then you will know for sure that the markings on your body upon waking are most likely the result of bed bug bites.

There are some telltale differences between bed bug bites and other insect bites and general rashes. Most often bed bug bites happen on the exposed areas of your skin, face, hands, neck, arms, feet, etc.… You will likely see several bites clumped together or seemingly following a line or zig-zag pattern. With other types of bug bites, like a mosquito bite, you usually only find one bite or a couple of random bites. It’s harder to tell the difference from a flea bite as there are usually multiple flea bites together that are itchy. Bed bug bites may or may not be itchy and sometimes don’t even show up on the skin depending on the person's reaction.

The bites alone won’t give you a definitive answer to whether you have a bed bug infestation. You also need to look for other signs. Signs of bed bugs may include seeing blood spots on sheets and mattresses, spotting discarded wings or shells of the bed bugs. Spotting brownish feces in the covers or seams of a mattress. The number one sign would be spotting the bugs themselves. Bed bugs are oval and brownish-red in color, think of an apple seed with legs. If you spot them they will be in the seams of the mattress, behind paintings near the bed, in cracks in paint and behind peeling wallpaper, in outlets and in corners of drawers.
