What Are The Signs Of Termites?
January 18, 2017
Do you have questions about termites? Questions like: what are termites, what do they look like, are they dangerous, what are the signs of a termite infestation, what kind of damage can they cause, and can I get rid of them myself? Chances are, if you have some of these questions, you already have a termite problem and may be in need of a professional pest control service to take care of that problem. Before we get to your termite issues, let’s try to answer some of these questions.
What is a termite? They are insects that feed on wood and other cellulose type products. The most common termite in West Chester is the subterranean termite that lives underground. They live in large social colonies that can be numerous. Termites journey through mud tubes that keep them moist and away from danger. Termites are known for how destructive they are to homes and other property.
What do termites look like? In a colony there is a queen and the workers, soldiers, and swarmers. You will probably never see the heavily protected queen. Her head and thorax are black and her ever-growing abdomen will be brown or tan. Workers and soldiers are the ones feeding on wood and delivering it to the rest of the colony. When you see the workers, they will be numerous and look like maggots or worms. However, unlike maggots and worms, they have six legs, 3 body parts, and 2 antennae. Also, their 3 body parts will look like 2 since the abdomen and thorax look like one part. Soldiers are much like the workers but are larger, darker, and have black pincers. Swarmers are usually less than ½ inch, and they have long white wings. Their bodies are black or dark brown, and their antennae are straight but like tiny balls stacked one by one on top of each other. They will swarm in large numbers around walkways, windowsills, and on outside walls.
Are termites dangerous? Yes. They can cause massive damage to the structure of homes and buildings that can be extremely costly. The only good news is, they do not carry disease or hurt people directly.
What are the signs of a termite infestation? Termites will leave mud tubes that fan out along foundation walls and subterranean termites will make tunnels underground. They can leave blowholes in trees and cause earthen packing. You may even hear termite noises as they excavate the wood. Your floors may be sagging, or you may find hollowed out wood structures. Termites will also leave piles of dead termite carcasses, feces, and shed wings. If you see any of these signs, you are in immediate need of a professional termite specialist.
What kind of damage can a termite cause? Subterranean termite colonies can contain as many as 1 million members. One million members can eat more than 10 pounds of wood each week, causing damage to foundation sills, support beams, and other wooden items. As you can see, if you spot any sign of termites, you need a professional to take care of it before they cause extensive damage.
Can I get rid of a termite infestation myself? Getting rid of termites is nearly impossible on your own. They keep their colonies at a distance from structures, sometimes up to 300’ away. They create a twisted network of tunnels that get them from place to place. So, you will need to locate their nest and use DIY sprays to get rid of all the termites deep inside the ground; but DIY products typically cannot reach that deeply into the ground, are not very effective, and can be extremely dangerous to the people and pets in your home. Chemicals can also be damaging to plants inside your home or on your property.
