Top Pest Prevention Tips For The Year
January 26, 2015
Pest prevention should be on the top of your to-do list this year. When pests get into your home they bring with them disease and bacteria. Some pests can even bring in other pests. Having a pest infestation can contaminate food, harm your family and even cause unsafe living conditions. This is why keeping pests away from your home is so important. There are different approaches to pest control, depending on the season. With each season come different types of pests that try to enter your home. Keeping your home safe and comfortable for you and your family is so important year-round.
Here are some helpful tips to try and keep pests out of your home, no matter what season or what pest type. Start pest proofing around your hoe with these tips!
The first step to year round pest prevention is sealing up your home. Make sure that any cracks or gaps in the exterior of your home are closed tight. These gaps may appear around venting ducts, windows, doors and pipes. You will also want to keep any food sources locked down. Now, a lock and chain may be overkill but storing food sources like cereal boxes, dog food and even trash outside in tightly sealed containers will help in deterring pests.
During the spring and summer months you are going to want to keep your new landscaping trees, shrubs and bushes trimmed back away from your home. This greenery helps pests gain easy access into your home, if it is too close. You will also want to make sure you have proper venting in your attic and crawl spaces to keep moisture down. Replace any rotting or wet wood. Some insects, like termites and carpenter ants, are attracted to deteriorating wood.
During the fall you will want to repair weather stripping and repair any foundation gaps before insects start to try to find a warm shelter for the winter.
If you are storing wood for the winter, you will want to store the wood at least 20 feet away from your home. This will keep the pests that are attracted to wood away from your home. They will not see your home as a convenient, warm shelter for the winter.
You can also contact a professional pest exterminator to help you locate any pest problems in your home and help you set up a plan to eliminate any current pests and prevent any future pest infestations.
