Tips To Avoid Mosquitoes This Spring
May 10, 2017
Here we go again. It happens every year, like clockwork. In fact, it happens so faithfully, we have given it its own season. Mosquito season. And, this season those mosquitoes are going to be even worse, thanks to the mild winter we had. But, that isn't the worst part. The worldwide spread of the Zika virus has finally reached our shores. Last year, we saw two localized outbreaks of the Zika virus, and health agencies are watching this threat closely as we head into the heart of mosquito season 2017. Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself.
Mosquito repellent is still the number one way to ward off mosquito bites. There are many options that work but we suggest a repellent that has 100% DEET. If you don't prefer to put repellent on your skin, you can still get protection by applying it to your clothing. If you'd like a natural alternative you can use a repellent with oil of lemon eucalyptus.
If you are able to wear a long sleeve shirt or pants, do so. This will reduce bites. But be aware that mosquitoes can bite through some fabrics. For complete protection, and in certain circumstances when it is appropriate, you may consider using apparel that has mosquito netting.
The best way to avoid mosquito bites is to not be around mosquitoes. While it is impractical to stay in your home and never go outside, you may try going out only during the day when mosquitoes hide from the sun. Going out in the morning or evening will result in a greater chance of being bitten. If you stay inside, be sure to check all of your screens to ensure that they are in good working condition, and are able to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
Don't be afraid to use your backyard. There are many things you can do to reduce mosquitoes. Some are localized, like using a large fan to keep them away when you're sitting on your porch. Some methods make your home less attractive, like reducing vegetation that collects water. Some directly target mosquitoes and mosquito breeding sites, like mosquito reduction service from a pest professional. Mosquitoes aren't inevitable. You can reduce their numbers and make your backyard a nicer place to be.
