Stink Bugs Making Their Way Back Inside West Chester Homes
October 23, 2018
What’s your favorite autumn scent? Apple cider? Pumpkin spice? Cinnamon? Stink bug?
Of all the scented candles you’ve ever enjoyed, that last one probably never made it on your list. But it is, in fact, a pretty common scent this time of year.
Stink bugs are content to remain outdoors in West Chester all through the spring, summer, and fall. In late fall, however, when the temperature gets colder and stays colder, stink bugs know it’s time to find a warm place to live for the winter. That’s where your West Chester home comes into play.
First, the stink bugs congregate on your house, most likely on the side that gets the most sun. Then they’ll look for a way inside.
Once in, they’ll live by the dozens, hundreds, or even thousands, within wall voids and ceilings. You may see them snacking on your plants or the fruit you left out on the counter. On warmer days you may see more of them as the heat inside tricks them into thinking it’s time to go back outside again. They’ll come out of hiding to find a way to escape the confines of your home.
If you see these bugs, your instinct may be to squish them, but they were named sting bug for a very particular reason. When squished or threatened, stink bugs give off a strong unpleasant odor that will make your home uninviting, to say the least. You can try to vacuum them up, but you’ll want to remove the vacuum bag from your home immediately afterward to avoid the odors inside it. You’ll also want to be careful as the chemical that produces the smell can cause irritation and allergic reactions in some people.
How do you avoid these stinky creatures? Your best bet is to take preventative measures so they can’t get into your home in the first place.
Do a perimeter walk around your home, visually inspecting the foundation, walls, windows, and doors. Stink bugs are small and can get into your home through tiny cracks, so you’ll want to make a note of any holes, gaps, and cracks you see.
Once you’ve done your visual inspection, it’s time to get to work repairing any problem areas. Seal up holes, gaps, and cracks. Fix or replace any screens that are torn or have holes in them. Fill gaps around windows. If outside doors allow any sunlight in, repair weather stripping and consider adding a door sweep. Fix broken roof shingles and missing siding. Cover vents and cap your chimney.
