Spring Pest Prevention Tips
April 22, 2016
When you hear the word "tip," what comes to mind? Tip, as in the tip of your tongue? Tipping the scales? Or maybe the kind of tip you leave for a server at a restaurant? While these are all perfectly fine "tips," in this blog, we will be talking about the kind of tips you can use to make your yard and your home less inviting to insects and animal animals this spring.
If you are careful to follow the instructions below, you may have success in making your property a little less buggy.
Do a close inspection of the outside of your home for gaps, cracks, holes, or areas of rot. Seal up holes using a caulking gun and repair damaged areas. Pay attention to the areas around pipes, wires, air conditioners, or anything else that enters your home. Insects need only the most minuscule openings to squeeze through - and a mouse only needs a hole the size of a dime.
Store all firewood well away from your home and up off the ground.
Remove any areas of standing water where insects such as mosquitoes like to breed.
Trim back vegetation and branches from your walls and roof line. Insects and animals alike use these plants as bridges to gain access to your home.
Make sure that all of your outside garbage cans have tight fitting lids. This will keep insects from using them as breeding sites. And if your trash is accessible to insects and animals, they will come back time and time again to dine on your leftovers.
Check all of your screens and door sweeps and make sure they are all in good working order.
Put screening over chimneys, vents, and any other openings that lead into your home.
Check your gutters and make sure they are free of obstructions, and make sure all water is channeled well away from your home.
Clean, clean, clean. Focus on areas where food is prepared or stored, and pay close attention to hard-to-see places such as under the fridge and inside the toaster.
Seal up all stored foods either inside the refrigerator or in tightly sealed plastic containers.
If you have moisture in areas, utilize fans, dehumidifiers, or air conditioning units to dry things out. Also, make sure all leaky pipes, sinks, tubs, or toilets are repaired.
Keep all indoor trash in cans that have lids on them.
Only put pet food down when it is time for your pet to eat. Otherwise, store it in a sealed container.
