Winter weather is finally upon us here in Souderton, Pennsylvania, and with chilly weather comes many reasons to celebrate. You can finally wear that cozy sweater that was definitely too hot for summer; light a fire in the fireplace that’s been vacant for most of the year; drink hot chocolate til your heart's content, and bring the family together to spend the holiday season surrounded by those you love. What’s not to love about winter? Well, maybe more than you think.

Why are spiders in my home?

Unfortunately, there are some things you should keep an eye out for as we settle into these colder months. Summer is a season when many pests are content to thrive outdoors. However, as soon as the season's change and the weather starts to cool, those same pests would rather move indoors than brave the winter cold.

Flies, stink bugs, ladybugs, and several other insects like to invade Souderton homes when the heat of summer fades away. They will find every possible nook and cranny in order to do so. Unlike these insects, spiders don’t enter homes during the winter to escape the chill, but to search for their main food source—insects. So an increase in insects in your home will also increase the likelihood of a spider infestation.

Spiders inside the home are not something anyone wants to deal with, so it is important to get to the root of the problem and make sure no more spiders are able to get indoors. Insects are often the reason new spiders move inside, so cutting off the food source spiders depend on will greatly reduce the number of spiders invading your home.

Here are a few ways to help keep them out:

  • Seal or repair cracks and gaps in your home's exterior walls and foundation.
  • Trim tree branches and foliage and keep away from your home's outer walls.
  • Install door sweeps on all doors that lead outside.
  • Replace torn window screens.
  • Keep the inside and outside of your home clean and organized.
  • Remove any existing spiders and webs so that new spiders are not able to hatch inside your home.
