Here in West Chester, PA, every year, like clockwork, bugs start looking for a place to hide from the cold. These are called overwintering pests. Perhaps you've seen some of them; lady bugs crawling on your television screen; stink bugs perching on your light fixtures or crawling around in your curtains; box elder bugs speckling your walls or piling up on your window sills. Now is the time to get your home prepared for the fall invasion. It is never too early to start. The pest control methods that keep these pests out will also work to keep out many of the other pests that can invade your home any time of the year.

Exclusion Tips For All Invaders

Whether you're looking to seal out lady bugs, boxelder bugs and stinkbugs, or silverfish, earwigs, millipedes, centipedes and other year-round bugs, these tips should help:

  • Do a detailed inspection of your exterior walls and seal any gaps, cracks, or holes you find. Look closely. It doesn't take much of a hole for these pests to get in. Use liquid cement to seal your foundation, and a caulking gun to take care of miscellaneous entry points in your exterior walls. Pay close attention to gaps around window frames, pipes, air conditioning units, and conduit.

  • Your screens are your frontline defense against bugs. It is important that they are all in good working condition. If you find any gaps, holes, or tears, and are not able to afford to re-screen them at this time, there are many tricks and tips for patching things up.

  • Weather stripping on sliding doors is a notorious entry point for bugs. Check to see that your weather stripping makes a good seal all the way down.

  • Before bugs get into your home, they often get into the garage or porch areas. It is not only important to keep the garage door, or front door closed, but to also check and make sure the door sweep on the door leading into your home makes good contact all the way across.

  • If you have an open chimney, consider having a cap installed, or apply a screen.

  • If you have vents, consider covering these with window-grade screening.

  • Make sure the damper on your dryer vent is not stuck open.
