How To Tell If Your West Chester Home Is At Risk For Bed Bugs This Summer
August 19, 2019
You may be wondering if the summer months mean that your West Chester home is at risk for bed bugs. The short answer is, yes. Bed bugs are hardy pests that are active all year long. However, factors in the summer can lead to an increased bed bug presence and infestations. There are many common warning signs that could indicate that you have or are at risk of bed bugs. If you think you could have bed bugs in your home, it’s time to call Moyer Pest Control for an inspection.
Factors that Lead to Increased Bed Bugs in Summer
While you may think that summer weather increases bed bugs like it does other pests, that’s not necessarily the case. Bed bug presence increases in summer due to human factors.
Here are a few contributors to increased bed bug infestations during the summer:
School is out. Gym lockers, cubbies, backpacks, school books and more can harbor bed bugs that get brought home at the end of the school year.
College students return home. This situation is similar to the above but you must not forget the addition of bedding, towels, and clothing that could all be hiding bed bugs.
Vacations. Staying in hotels and traveling to crowded tourist areas makes you susceptible to picking up bed bugs.
Holidays and Parties. From Memorial Day to 4th of July, and concluding with Labor Day, you are likely to have many visitors to your home. All of these visitors have the potential to bring bed bugs along with them.
Common Warning Signs of Bed Bugs
One of the first things people usually notice when they have bed bugs is the bites. If you are waking up with unexplained itchy red marks on your skin, it is a good indication that you could have bed bugs. If further exploration of your mattress reveals dark red to brown streaks or spots, this could be evidence of blood from bed bug bites or it may be bed bug feces. You may also notice bug 'shells' around the seams of your mattress, in the backs of drawers, or around your floorboards. These shells' may be the shed exoskeletons of bed bugs.
Bed bugs are good at hiding, so it’s possible that you have an infestation without actually seeing any bugs. If you have a large infestation, you may see bed bugs scurrying about, which is a sign that you need professional help immediately.
