Mosquitoes can turn a fun summer party into a biting, itching, scratching, annoying, buzzing bad time. It doesn’t matter how many great appetizers you serve or how good your BBQ is, mosquitoes will ruin the party. So as a clever PA homeowner, we know you’ve probably been thinking of ways to keep the mosquitoes from finding your home this summer. But we hate to tell you- stocking up on citronella candles and bug spray isn’t entirely effective. Want to do more than just repel the mosquitoes? We’ve got the answer for you! Here are some tips on how to mosquito proof your home and property this summer from the mosquito management professionals at Moyer Pest.

  • Eliminate any standing water on your property. Puddles, holes in the ground that accumulate water and even containers that catch water, like buckets, flower pots, old tires and other items should be removed. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so it is wise to remove the items that may catch water on your property.

  • Make sure that gutters and ditches are clear of debris and are able to flow freely. If these get blocked up, the water in them becomes standing, which can then become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

  • Keep grass cut short to eliminate hiding places for mosquitoes during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Limit flowers and plants on your property; although female mosquitoes feed on blood, they only need our blood to nourish their eggs. Both male and female mosquitoes feed on nectar, so limiting flowers on your property can limit mosquito food, and thus mosquito populations.

  • When spending time outdoors, use an insect repellent that contains DEET. You may want to check with your child’s pediatrician before applying DEET to see what concentrations are safe for them.

Although these tips can help reduce mosquito populations you find on your property, they won’t remove them entirely. The best way to manage mosquitoes on your property is through professional mosquito control. At Moyer, we offer mosquito management treatments that are monthly from May to October. Each of our mosquito control services consists of a backpack barrier treatment of foliage, buildings, areas of vegetation, porches, eaves, patios and areas around windows. These treatments will eliminate adult mosquitoes to help keep them from being a problem for you this summer.

Not only are mosquitoes obnoxious, but they are known for spreading dangerous diseases, including malaria, West Nile virus and encephalitis. Give us a call to learn more about our mosquito management program and to set up your first appointment. Don’t fight mosquitoes this summer; find respite with mosquito management services from the Souderton, PA pest control professionals at Moyer Indoor | Outdoor!
