How To Inspect For Bed Bugs
October 30, 2017
It’s the spookiest time of year! With Halloween just around the corner, you’re probably going to have an increase of visitors to your West Chester home. Maybe trick or treaters will stop by for candy, or maybe you’ll have a costume party with friends. As you enjoy this festive time, don’t forget to inspect your home for evidence of bed bugs. Finding a bed bug infestation early is key to preventing it from spreading throughout the house and having a much bigger problem on your hands. The increase in visitors also increases your risks for bed bug infestation. Here’s how to inspect for bed bugs:
Bed bug bites on the skin is a sure indication, but you may not realize that's what you're looking at since other insects may leave similar bites on your skin. Some people can get bit by bed bugs without any reaction whatsoever, so bites are not always the best way to determine if you have bed bugs or not.
Other indications of bed bugs include:
Red or rusty-colored stains on the mattress or bed sheets. This is caused by the bugs being crushed under your body weight, of blood that has been spilled during feeding.
Dark brown or black dots on your sheets which look like a marker that has bled on the fabric. These spots are bed bug excrement.
Tiny eggs, about 1 mm in size on the sheets or in the seams of the mattress.
Shed bed bug skins, they will molt as they go through different growth stages.
Live bed bugs crawling around.
When examining your home for bed bugs, don't just inspect it a day after your Halloween festivities, either. You may not see these pests the first night or two after guests are in your home but that doesn't mean one or two didn't get in. Keep up with your inspections on a regular basis, as one female bed bug in your home can quickly turn into hundreds or more.
