Did you know that bed bugs are still a threat to people all across the country? It’s true! They are still actively hitchhiking into people’s homes and causing homeowners stress and sleepless nights. The good news is that while they can be difficult to eliminate, with professional help you can successfully get rid of these pests from your home.
Bed bugs are a parasitic insect that feed on the blood of mammals and they particularly like human blood. Adult bed bugs are about ¼ of an inch in length, are a flat oval shape and reddish brown in color. They do not fly or jump so their main ways of travel are “hitchhiking” a ride on a host, crawling to a new area through walls, pipes and floors or entering into a new home on used furniture or other used items. Bed bugs are mostly nocturnal and will feed on their hosts during the night while they are sleeping. Contrary to popular belief, most people do not have a reaction to bed bug bites. If there is a reaction it is very similar to other insect bites making it difficult to determine whether bed bugs are present or not by just relying on the presence of a bite.
So even though bed bugs can be very difficult to find and identify to the untrained eye, they can leave signs of their presence behind. Some sure fire signs that bed bugs have most likely invaded your home include:
Finding dark rusty colored flecks (excrement) on your sheets, or underneath your mattress or box spring.
Seeing small dots of blood on your sheets or pillowcases.
Finding piles of dead bed bugs or their skins underneath your mattress, box spring, or in any other area of your home.
Seeing actual live adult bed bugs in your mattress, or with the help of a flashlight in the cracks of wooden furniture, walls or near floor boards.
