How Termites Get Into Souderton Homes & Ways To Stop Them

June 5, 2020

While there are many different pests that you might encounter in your Souderton home, one of the most troublesome and damaging is the termite. While some pests are mostly just considered a nuisance, others can cause big problems. Termites are known for causing significant property damage, and they can do a lot of damage before you even notice they've infested your Souderton home.

Because termites eat wood, they can chew through things like furniture and the wooden structures of your home such as wood flooring and wooden beams. They can end up costing homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs as it’s often hard to identify an infestation until they've caused significant damage.

Here in Souderton, we mostly deal with subterranean termites. This species uses mud tubes to move from their food source to their nest. They also eat wood 24/7. Though they remain hidden in your walls, you may have an opportunity to identify one. They have long, oval bodies that are usually creamy white, six legs, and antennae. They exist in a caste system. Workers are the smallest. Soldiers are slightly larger with noticeable pincers. Reproductives or swarmers are the largest. Once a colony is established, swarmers will sprout wings, emerge from the colony, mate, shed their wings, and find a new place to establish a sister colony.

With the exception of reproductives, termites do not emerge from their nest or food source. Therefore, you probably won't see a worker or a soldier. You may, however, see the discarded iridescent wings of warmers.

How Do Termites Get Into My Home?

You might be wondering how it is that these subterranean termites get into your home seeing as they tend to live underground and travel through mud tubes. But, it’s precisely these strange mud tunnels that allow them to reach your home and begin wreaking havoc.
These termites keep their nests underground, and they create mud tunnels to connect their nests to their food sources. They create these tubes using wood, soil, and their saliva.

Essentially, the termites will begin to work their way up into a building by creating these mud tubes, and it is quite easy for them to do so if the soil is in direct contact with wooden structures. Over time, termites can build quite extensive mud tunnels giving them access to wood throughout your home.

Termite Prevention Tips

Because termites can do so much damage to your home and cost you a lot of money, knowing how to prevent them is important. While no prevention methods are completely effective, they can reduce your risk of developing a termite problem.

The best thing to do is look at things that make your home attractive to termites and try to make your home less appealing to these insects. Subterranean termites need moist environments to survive, and they get into homes when wood is in direct contact with soil.

Here are some prevention tips:

  • Keep firewood stored away from the exterior of your home.

  • Limit how much soil is touching your home.

  • Consider placing some sort of barrier around your home’s foundation and the soil.

  • Remove any wood on your poetry that has any water damage.

  • Reduce moisture by repairing leaky pipes and faucets.

  • Keep crawl spaces and basements well ventilated.
