Finding Fleas? Here's What To Do!
August 12, 2013
At Moyer, we’ve been getting a lot of calls and emails from concerned folks in our area about fleas. Some people want to know how to get fleas off their dog or cat while some people are just looking for flea identification. Some folks are having trouble with fleas that are infesting their homes and yards. Sometimes, no matter how much cleaning you do, getting rid of fleas in your home and on your property can feel like an impossible task. So to help you get rid of a flea infestation in your home, the pros at Moyer Indoor | Outdoor would like to offer a few flea control techniques you can do on your own to help you eliminate flea populations inside your property.
To get rid of fleas, vacuum any infested areas of your home. Do a very thorough vacuum, making sure to move objects that are on the floor rather than just vacuuming around them. Vacuum under furniture that you cannot move and vacuum upholstered furniture as best you can. When you have finished vacuuming, take out the bag or canister and make sure you empty it in a garbage can outside your home. You may then want to either throw the vacuum bag away or wash out the canister to make sure any fleas or flea eggs that are present are gone.
Wash pet bedding often. This includes dog and cat beds, blankets and other areas where pets sleep (your bed?). If your pet sleeps in a kennel, make sure to thoroughly wash the kennel with hot soapy water.
Make sure your pets have flea protection in the form of flea treatments provided by your pets’ veterinarian. Flea treatments offered by your vet can be much more effective than over the counter flea treatment options, but they will help repel fleas, keeping your pet flea-free, which in turn can help keep your home free of fleas. Read the directions for the flea treatment carefully so that you use it correctly to ensure maximum protection.
Use a fine toothed metal comb to brush your pets’ fur. This can help you find fleas on your pet; if you locate a flea, brush it off into a bucket of soapy water. It would be best to do this outside so that the fleas don’t just jump off your pet and onto your floor.
All of these tips can help control fleas inside your property.
