Moyer Indoor | Outdoor offers travelers tips to avoid bringing home bed bugs after time away

Whether you are traveling for business or for pleasure, you are at risk for encountering bed bugs.  Unfortunately many unsuspecting travelers return home with bed bugs because they don’t realize just how easy it is to meet up with these pests.  At Moyer Indoor | Outdoor, we are a Pennsylvania pest control company who has seen the number of bed bugs call significantly increase in recent years and would like to offer some bed bug prevention tips to help travelers avoid bringing bed bugs back to their home and office.

  •     Before you bring any of your things into your hotel room, inspect the room!

  •     Use a small flashlight to scout for adult bed bugs, dried blood spots or caste skins on mattresses, linens, along walls or in the crevices of upholstered furniture

  •     Check inside nightstands, end tables, bureaus and closets and under all furniture in your room

  •     Do not unpack your luggage into hotel room bureaus; keep all of your clothes in your suitcase, closed and on top of the luggage racks available in every room

  •     If you see any signs of bed bug activity, contact the hotel manager and request a new room, well away from your current one or leave the hotel

  •     Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers so when you arrive at home, do not bring anything indoors until you thoroughly inspected it; this includes not only your luggage, but backpacks, purses, diaper bags and computer cases

  •     Wash and dry all of your clothing, even clean ones, in the hottest temperature allowed by the fabric

Bed bugs are not attracted to unsanitary conditions; they are attracted to people, so a 5-star hotel is just as likely to experience a bed bug problem as a less prestigious accommodation.  If you carefully and thoroughly inspect your hotel room upon arrival, you can rest assured that your time away can be bed bug free.
