The pros at Moyer would like to provide you with some helpful information about cockroaches including the most common types found in Pennsylvania and what to do if they happen to find their way inside of your home.
In Pennsylvania the species that is most common and causes the most problems for homeowners is the German cockroach. The German cockroach is most often introduced into homes inside of boxes, packages or even through the introduction of new or used appliances. German cockroaches can be found living in cabinets, drawers, underneath sinks, and behind and underneath of appliances. They will utilize plumbing pipes to travel from room to room.
Two other common species that can be found in Pennsylvania homes include the Oriental cockroach and the American cockroach.
The Oriental cockroach or water bug as they are commonly called likes to live in dark moist places including basements, bathrooms and crawl spaces. They often crawl into homes while foraging for food or even through the sewer system.
The American cockroach is the least common species to be found living in homes but if given the chance they will make themselves at home in your home. They prefer to live near hot pipes, appliances or other areas of homes where temperatures are high.
Before entering into your home cockroaches have been living in or traveling through some unsanitary conditions such as;
So when they come inside your home, it is not just them that are coming inside, it's also all the bacteria and diseases that are living on their bodies and legs. That bacteria is now coming into contact with utensils, plates, food, and food prep areas as the cockroaches freely explore your home.
Once inside, not only are they spreading bacteria and illness, they will also begin feeding on food and other products that they find. They'll also start breeding (very quickly) and they will leave behind shed skins and feces which can lead to allergy and asthma attacks for individuals living in your home. A cockroach infestation is the perfect storm of contamination and filth that needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible!
