Bed Bugs Frustrating School Systems

There was a time when parents only had to be concerned about their children bringing home bad grades from school, or the dreaded head lice occasionally. Now, however, you have to be concerned with bed bugs. These little parasites are making a huge comeback due to the increase of families traveling. A family could go away, pick up and bring home bed bugs, and unbeknownst to anyone start an infestation that spreads to a backpack or clothing, finally making a trip to school. The cycle continues as the bed bugs feed on human blood in order to reproduce, growing the population and the chance to be carried from one place to another.

The fact is that students, teachers, and staff may unwittingly carry bed bugs into a school, where others may unknowingly take them home. Additionally, some bed bugs may make the classroom their home. School administrators should educate students, teachers, staff, and parents about the warning signs of bed bugs. They should also take proactive measures and have a plan if an infestation should occur. Teachers should have students place their backpacks and jackets inside sealed plastic bags when not in use. Coats and backpacks should never be allowed to touch the ground or be put in a common pile. If you are a parent, educate your child about bed bugs. Be sure to inspect backpacks and other school bags after school, do not bring backpacks into bedrooms, but rather keep them in a closed storage bin elsewhere in the home. If the school your child goes to announces that they have detected a bed bug infestation, you should act immediately when your child arrives home. Have them remove their clothing and place the clothing in a clothes dryer at high heat for 20 minutes, the bed bugs will not be able to survive the heat for that long.
