Bed Bug Warning Signs
September 11, 2015
Bed bugs have made a comeback in recent years and are wreaking havoc across the U.S. Urban areas have been hit especially hard, but they are rapidly expanding outward from there. Bed bugs are an elusive creature about the size of an apple seed. The adults are reddish-brown in color and only about 1/4’’ in size. These nocturnal pests have no season and feed on human blood anywhere they can get it. Although these creatures were once thought to inhabit only unsanitary, dirty places; we now know that they really don’t care how tidy your home or business may or may not be. These bugs are wingless and spread by hitchhiking rides on unsuspecting people, their luggage, pets, and any other thing that you may carry from place to place. They especially love to hide in electronic equipment such as TV’s, stereos, computers and the like; all of which provide an ideal hiding place due to the difficulty in which you will have eradicating them. Finding bed bugs is like playing a game of hide-and-seek that you can never win!
So how exactly can you tell if your home has been invaded by these most avid hiders? Here are a few things to look for in your home (hotel room, dorm or any other place you may stay):
Inspect the bedroom: First, check your sheets for signs of tiny blood stains. Second, lift the bottom sheet of the mattress and check for black or brown fecal stains. They appear as tiny spots usually in groups. Search carefully along the seams of the mattress and box spring and around the tag for signs of eggs, nymphs, or adult bed bugs. Next, check the headboard and frame – especially the holes where the screws hold the bed together – this is a famous hiding place. Also, use a flashlight to check your closet and dresser drawers for any signs of the creatures too. Lastly, check all the cracks and crannies along hardwood floors or wall seams.
Inspect your living room: Check the seams and underneath cushions on your sofa, loveseat, or recliner. Even though they are called ‘bed’ bugs, they actually can dwell anywhere in your home. Next, check any electronics to be sure there are not any bugs hiding inside the components.
