Are You A Do-It-Yourself Kind Of Person?
February 9, 2016
Many of us appreciate a good challenge. The faucet is leaking? Do a search on the internet and find out how to fix that leak. There. Done! You need shelves in your child's closet? Well, just do a little research, go to the hardware store, and get the job done! Maybe there's a hole in your porch roof. Simply ask a neighbor for some advice and then tackle the problem on your own. Who needs to call a plumber or carpenter? There are many, many projects that come up around the house that can be successfully navigated with a little research and a little know-how; but there are some things that should be left to the professionals. Your furnace starts smoking like a chimney, several pipes freeze and burst in your basement, you start seeing cockroaches coming out of the woodwork...
Can you keep cockroaches from invading your home?
If you have not seen any evidence of cockroaches in your home, there are a number of things that you can do to try to prevent their entry.
Clean, clean, clean! Make sure all areas of your home are clean and clutter free. Pay close attention to areas where food is present. Make sure all crumbs are vacuumed up and all spills are cleaned up. Don't forget hard-to-reach spots such as under the fridge and between the stove and counter.
Put all food inside your refrigerator or inside sturdy containers that seal.
Eliminate all sources of water. Fix leaky pipes, faucets, tubs etc. Use fans or dehumidifiers to dry out the air in your home.
Keep all trash inside cans that have tightly fitting lids.
Trim trees and bushes back away from your home.
Keep mulch at least six inches away from your home.
Store firewood away from your home, and up off the ground.
Examine your exterior walls for gaps and cracks. Use a caulking gun to seal any holes you find.
Make sure all your screens and door sweeps are in good working order.
How about do-it-yourself cockroach removal?
If you are seeing cockroaches in your home or the evidence of cockroaches, it is not a good idea to try to tackle this problem on your own. Cockroaches are not only disgusting and creepy, they can carry a whole host of diseases including E. coli and Salmonella, which are potentially life threatening. Although there is plenty of online do-it-yourself advice on how to eradicate cockroaches, these insects are extremely difficult to completely eradicate. And, if you don't get them all, they will quickly reproduce and continue to plague you, leading to a never-ending battle against mysterious illness--and not so mysterious frustrations.
