Have you found that you have some new neighbors moving a little too close for comfort? Stinging insects like yellow jackets and wasps have a tendency to build nests right in close to your home or property. They can to build nests in the eaves around your home, in garages, sheds and attics.

This is always an unpleasant experience for any home owner. These new neighbors do not just move in and pleasantly setup a white picket fence and plant flowers. They build a nest and violently guard it from any intruders, aka you or your family.

Wasps and yellow jackets build hives and start a colony inside. Colonies can get up to thousands of members. They are usually harmless in a regular nest in the wild. However, when they become close neighbors to your home it makes for more human disturbances to cause irritation to the hive. If a hive feels threatened they will sting the threat to make it leave. This can be you or a family member.

A yellow jacket or wasp sting will typically just leave painful red mark on your skin. The problem that comes with a hive nearby as a neighbor, is that it brings multiple stinging insects into close range. If you are attacked by a nest of stinging insects it can cause anaphylactic shock. If you are attacked by a hive of wasps or yellow jackets you should seek medical attention immediately. If you are allergic to stinging insects call 911 immediately.

Here are a few tips to preventing stinging insects from moving in too close for comfort:

  3. If you think you have an infestation or you find a nest on your property call a professional pest exterminator to help you remove the nest safely. You should never try to remove a nest on your own.
