Silverfish are a small insect with a long, slender, tear-drop shaped, flat body and measure ½ to 1 inch in length. These insects get their name from their light grey/ blue coloring which can appear shimmery and look silvery as it moves across floors and surfaces in an almost fish-like manner.
Silverfish need humidity to survive. They like the humid areas of our homes and are typically found in kitchen cupboards, basements, laundry rooms, attics, and under bathroom sinks. They like dark places and they can often be found active at night or in dark places during the day. Silverfish do not hibernate so they can be active all year round. Their source of food can be anything that contains starch or polysaccharides. Many common items containing these substances are: sugar, human hair, dandruff, photos, paper, glue (especially wallpaper paste, which they eat after biting a small hole in the paper) and book bindings.
Silverfish do not bite or sting and are not associated with any diseases, they are considered a nuisance though with their presence and their ability to cause damage to our personal items and wallpaper.
Silverfish can be difficult to control because they are nocturnal and their ability to hide in a variety of places throughout your home. A Moyer Service Professional™ can confirm the presence of silverfish and recommend one of our 2 levels of interior service to help you get rid of silverfish.
Silverfish are not a pest many homeowners have much success eliminating on their own. Many do-it-yourself repellents and sprays to rid your property of silverfish simply do not work as the chemicals they use are not effective. Also, if misused or mixed improperly, pesticides can be very dangerous to people, pets or plants.
The health and safety of our customers, their family or employees is very important to us and that is why we use Integrated Pest Management products and treatments that are EPA registered for pest control use. In addition, all of our Service Professionals™ are registered and licensed by the state or local jurisdictions where we provide service to ensure proper application.
Moyer Service Professionals™ are committed to helping you as soon as possible. In most cases, we can respond the same or very next day.
Many pest problems can be difficult to prevent so many of our customers choose one of our 3 comprehensive, year round programs to ensure silverfish stay out of their home or business.
